After that, I was kind of concerned about buying a kit without any way to hear the sound in advance, but decided to take a chance. I have to say, this kit more than met any hopes or expectations I had! The keys are as nice and smooth and playable as on my Geckos, it was fairly easy to change them out on the problematic kalimba, and they fixed all the playing issues I had. And the sound was great; it rivalled my Gecko kalimbas! I ordered some more kits and pestered Mr. Hortman into making me a flat plate - style kalimba, and it turned out wonderfully; the notes are clear and bell-like; it may even be the equal of my Gecko k-17cas! I bought more than one additional kit, because at this price you can afford to try out different types of wood and shapes for sound. Making your own isn't for everyone, but if you want to give it a try, I think you will be very pleased with the results from this kit. I have built 5 Kalimbas now using them and the sound is incredible. Great Resonance, nice sustain, no dead tines, what more can I say. Nice hammer as well. Don't go for cheaper ones, they most likely aren't made of steel.
