I've carried a pair of Orion Ultra-View 8x42 porro prism binocs for years, and they are kind of my gold standard, though they are kind of heavy and not that fun to carry for any distance. Their wide field of view and stellar optics make up for their weight and have bee the reason I have not bothered to shop very actively for a pair of roof prism binocs... until now.The Dessports 12x42 binocs are very impressive. The image doesn't strike me as 12x but maybe closer to 10x, but I don't have any measurements to prove that. Regardless, the image is definitely more highly magnified than my 8x Orions. Best of all, it looks great. It's slightly less bright, but that is to be expected at a higher magnification. They don't have quite the wide field of vision my Orions have, but I am willing to accept this small sacrifice for the lighter weight and higher magnification. Speaking of, I'm actually happy they don't seem to be a true 12x. I was concerned about that, because the higher you go in magnification, the harder it is to hold them steady on a target. I birdwatch, so being zoomed in too close and being unable to hold binoculars steady is a horrible experience. It can give you headaches.The case is nice - nothing too fancy but padded and more than adequate. The lens cleaner is the same, expected these days. The lens caps on both ends are great. I've never had a pair that kept the objective lens covers attached when you open them. I like this, since you can cover them if you don't intend to use them for a while, rather than be without them and leave the lenses open and exposed to the elements. The strap is pretty weak but not horrible. For this price, I'm not complaining. I can always buy another strap. But this one will get the job done for a while, for sure. However, some of the plastic parts on it look a little suspect for the long haul. We'll see if they last years of use without cracking or breaking.All in all, I am very impressed with the optics of these binoculars. I doubt you can find a better pair for the price. They really look good! They feel good too. The focusing wheel isn't as smooth and effortless as the one on my Orions, but it works just fine. Same for the right eye focus. I have never had a pair of binoculars so I finally decided to get them so I was able to see when we are hiking or going to baseball games. These came in a nice case, have a neck strap so you don't have to hold them constantly and they have nice covers for both sides of the lens. The lens covers on the front just flip down so they are easy to cover back up.
