The handle is made of a dense plastic (yellow) with a grip portion covered with a softer rubber-like plastic (black) which is tightly bonded to the handle. All together, these measures definitely help absorb impacts very well. To a degree, this a personal thing, but for me, I didn't have any issues using it on an anvil shaping hot metal. Regardless of what you do though, I would highly recommend wearing work gloves as well. It appears heavy enough to move some metal! Sure, it is not one of those super nice and expensive tools but it gets the job done at a very reasonable price. I really like it so far. Before putting it to use, I had to smooth out the main face to remove sharp edges and add a small curvature. This would be more useful for blacksmithing to avoid scarring metal. I also smoothed out the nose a little bit. The handle fits my hand comfortable so I can use it for some time without fatigue. The head is attached to the handle very tightly and securely and is coated so I believe it should last a long time. Overall, it is a very capable tool that can do lots of things and is a good bang for your buck.
