I LOVED Carrie Ryan's Forest of Hands and Teeth trilogy -- which had a fantastic setting, was exciting, had memorable characters, and a good plot -- but Daughter of Deep Silence is completely different. The setting is boring (they're on an island, but she's so wrapped up in herself that she never really explores it), the characters are largely forgettable, and the plot just isn't very good. The plot can actually be typed out in a single paragraph...you really wouldn't need any more space for it. I'm not going to "ruin" the plot for anyone though (that's not the purpose of a review), so I won't do that.Almost the entirety of the book is about revenge. The main character is incredibly jaded about something terrible that happened to her when she was younger, and she can't get over it. She plots and plots her revenge throughout the book, and when she finally gets the balls to carry out her plans, something goes wrong. And that "something" that goes wrong is really predictable.That's the entire book. Seriously. The only part I truly liked was the very end -- the last few pages. If I wasn't a stickler for finishing things I start I doubt I would've gotten through this one.I'd pass on this one if I were you. Hopefully Carrie writes a thriller next, because that seems to be her specialty. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great novel about Revenge! *by A***A on Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2016* I enjoyed this young adult novel, with a fairly original plot and great characters. Suspenseful and unexpected, the pages kept turning. Every so often I wanted to turn back the pages to see if I missed something. Revenge, a great theme. I first discovered her after seeing a book trailer for "The Forest of Hands and Teeth". The night I bought that book I opened it up thinking I would read a few pages and go to bed. I spent the next 6 hours or so engrossed in Ryan's writing and a very sleepy day following it as I literally could not put down the book. So it was again for "Daughter of Deep Silence". I had pre-ordered this book since I am a huge fan of Ryan's but had honestly forgotten what it was about. It downloaded to my Kindle and I opened it up thinking I would only read a few pages and go to bed. Jump to me at 1:30 AM this morning finally putting the book down. What a read! I wasn't sure what to expect and I was very pleasantly surprised at the plot twists and the story in general. Frances is an amazing character and the way she is written makes her jump out of the page at you. You feel for Libby and Frances and Cecil and even Grey. You want to know what happens. You want to know if she finally gets her revenge. You want to keep reading to find out what really happened on the Persephone on that fateful night and Ryan truly doesn't disappoint. Great characters and a pace that is set just right to keep you wanting to find out what happens next. The only con I found, if it even would be considered a con, is that the story reminded me a little bit of the CW show, "Ringer" mixed with another show, "Revenge". If you had taken those two shows and thrown them together, you might had found a similar plot but as I never actually watched either of those shows, it was just a thought in the back of my head as I read this story.If you are a fan of Ryan or a fan of a good revenge story, this is the book for you!
