The tubing is nice and thick, and it has some kind of coating that makes it smooth to the touch. The extension mechanism is dead simple to use, and works very well. It doesn't slip, and doesn't feel cheap at all. I'll be surprised if it breaks. The only problem I've had with it so far is some pitting of the metal, but that's entirely user error. My kids leave it submerged in the pool practically 24/7 so the chlorine has gone to work on it somewhat, but even with that abuse, it's holding up amazingly well.
