    Nicely written, but where are the women?

    It is a fine book and very well-researched, but although the title clearly states that the book is about "American Physicians in the 19th Century", the presence of women physicians is entirely neglected. For example, Abraham Jacobi is referred to as "one of the outstanding physicians of his time" (p. 214), but his wife, Mary Putnam Jacobi (one of the most influential 19th-century female physicians in American medicine) doesn't appear at all. Not to mention other pioneers such as Elizabeth Blackwell, Marie Zakrzewska, etc. are also excluded from the work. Seeing as the book was published in 1985, it hardly seems unreasonable to acknowledge one or more of these women's contributions to American medicine.

    Great book, with great references.  Not in any way an easy read, as there is so much in every sentence, and chapter.  There are great "Conclusion" sections in most chapters.  Thus, ROthstein tells us what he going to tell us, tells it to us, then tells us what he told us.  Classic!This book tells the story of how medicine evolved in the United States.  It takes us from sects to science.  We now need an update on where we are to go, given the pressures on medicine in the current economic envirnment. As a physician, this is valuable insite as we are faced with an era of new challenges in medicine.
