You squeeze them together and pull the catch away fro the clip. It stays free until you are done and then you squeeze the handles together and pull the catch to the clip to keep it closed. **Q: country of origen** A: Country of origin is Korea. **Q: What size is best for all-around use? 1/2", 3/4", or 1"? Thanks!** A: It really depends on what you are using them for. I would say for general garden use such as roses and shrubs 3/4 inch.
