I unboxed them, got batteries, and read the instructions which referenced a remote, which I assumed was for a different style of lights, so believed that they meant I needed to just hit the on/off button X number of times to get the lights to blink (fade, pulse, whatever). Fast forward to yesterday when I was setting up for the party. I decided that since I work with cretins, the delicate lights were too good to use, so brought them back to my desk and wound them back up and attempted to stuff them back in the box. IMAGINE MY SURPRISE when the remote fell out. Moral of the story: if instructions say there's a remote, there's a remote.
