Yes. I cut through 3/4" thick TREATED plywood, which is a really dense and heavy plywood because of all the chemicals in it. Treated plywood also tends to hold more moisture than regular plywood, at times it even feels damp to the touch, and two sheets stacked together with out some kind of divider between them will actually "sweat". So I really thought I would have had a problem cutting it, but this tool did great. Just make sure you use the cutter that is specifically for wood. With the correct bit you should be able to cut through any thickness of plywood. Hardwood may cause problems if you cut anything thicker than 3/4". I have not tried it in a full 1" thick hardwood board; as I have only cut ply. Just take your time, don't rush the cuts and clean them out often if you are making thin and curved cuts. If there is a high moisture content in the ply, the sawdust will build up in the cuts. I just repass the bit along the inside of the cut and the spinning bit can be used to clean the area. Please protect your eyes, wear goggles -- I tend to lean down really close to the area as I cut as my eyes are old and getting bad! Good luck with your project -- oh and this tool can be used just like a small dremmel brand tool. I needed to cut some really big nails out of some old wood and I tried one of my metal cutting disk from my dremmel and it worked great. So you can use this for a lot of different things. **Q: Can this tool be controlled to cut a fairly straight line / groove in a piece of wood, like a router?** A: Not really. You would be better off with a router. Routers will give you more options for bits and the fences are meant to guide along a straight edge. This tool is for rough plunge cuts (holes in drywall). **Q: Will this cut through plaster and Lathe walls? If so, what type of bit would I need?** A: Hi Bro, I bought one of this; and cut perfectly plaster, drywall panels and similar consistence products. The bit that come with it, Works nicely. If you Desire cut another materials like tiles for example, you need another bit for that material. I hope that information be useful.... **Q: Is this a good choice for a DIY CNC machine?** A: Absolutely, this is the equivalent of a small "Trim Router" that are often used in CNC and robotic wood and aluminum cutting apparatus. It is a well built cost efficient alternative to these "Routers", given that is can use 1/8" and 1/4" bits gives you plenty of cutter choices and takes the commonly found "Dremel" type bits as well as 1/4" carbide bits used for tougher materials. The only option I wish this tool had was a variable speed control. 30,000 RPM is fast for some bits and materials. However, if you choose the right bit for the job, use coolant and lubricants where applicable it should work fine.
