You cut a rectangle in the "top" based on your size needs (with an angle grinder or whatever you have). You can also create a small lip from the barrel itself if you cut a little farther horizontally than you need, and then bend inward with pliers. Just attach/place whatever surface you want (steel sheet, cast iron grate, pans). **Q: Do you need a blower?** A: These barrel stoves heat a large area using radiant heat only. You don't "need" a blower but many people do use the Magic Heat reclaimer in the stove pipe and they work really well to get even more heat from the unit.
