Classic fun fantasy adventure with cool Ray Harryhausen monsters and the beautiful Jane Seymour

*by T***N on Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2020*

Just a fun, classic, swashbuckling fantasy adventure movie you really don’t see much more anymore if at all. If you liked previous Sinbad films you would like this one, following the formula already established (though it is not formulaic in the sense of this being a bad thing); Sinbad and crew are in port, quickly have to leave port on some gravely important errand to an island that may or may not exist to seek some sort of magical aid that may or may not exist, Sinbad takes on board a very beautiful and revealingly dressed woman (who to be fair he respects and does what she can to help the mission), and in opposition are both a sorcerer served by both humans and monsters and animals they either summon or turn into as well as monsters at the final destination both race towards. Ok it is formulaic, but it is a great formula. The good, you get the wonderful work of Ray Harryhausen, who let’s face it is one of two main reasons to watch this film. I hope I don’t spoil things, but you get a trio of ghouls, a bronze automaton minotaur called the Minaton, a baboon (important to the story, the baboon is Sinbad’s dear friend and the brother of the woman he wants to marry, Farah, played by Jane Seymour, with the entire movie revolving around trying to change the baboon back to Prince Kassim before both the change is permanent and he loses the legal right to be crowned Caliph), a really large magical wasp, a surprisingly dangerous giant walrus (I think the most dangerous monster in the movie), a creature called a Troglodyte (with a classic Harryhausen design), and a saber-tooth cat. Just great work and a blast to see.The other reason one watches the film is Farah. Jane Seymour has always been a beautiful woman but she was especially gorgeous in this film, particularly in the wardrobe she sports in the film. Her character was never annoying or a drag or any sort of burden, she seemed like a strong motivation for Sinbad (who wanted very much to marry Farah but wanted her brother Prince Kassim to give his permission, something Sinbad was already going to work on as he owed a huge debt to Kassim), and again, pretty. There isn’t a lot bad in the film. I don’t think the villain is quite as strong perhaps as the villain of other Sinbad films (this time around we have the sorcerer Zenobia played by Margaret Whiting) but she was still an enormous threat and kudos to her monster summoning and monster creating choices. It was also neat how she wasn’t monstrous or treacherous just to be that way, as she had a good relationship with her son Rafi (played by Kurt Christian) and her motivation for her in the film was clear and logical. I liked the character Dione (played by Taryn Power) but for some reason some of her wardrobe, her hair, struck me as contemporary, even by the standards of today. Still, a good actress and an attractive woman, her entrance in the film shows her to be a strong character and she shows that strength again later. I thought some of the wisdom and knowledge displayed by Dione’s father Melanthius (played by Patrick Troughton) were a bit anachronistic and sometimes the actor playing Sinbad (Patrick Wayne) wasn’t always much to write about, not bad but maybe hammily over eager. I did like the sets and setting used, with the fabulous carved stone buildings of Petra appearing. Not as many sword fights this time though, at least compared with _The Golden Voyage of Sinbad_ but overall a very satisfying number of monsters.Good film, the only thing I regret is to learn that a few monsters that Harryhausen has planned for one reason or another did not make the film (among others a woolly mammoth, a yeti, and an Arsinoitherium; if any of those appeared it would have been wonderful but alas did not happen).
