Review: Don't bother with other fans, just get this one - This is a fantastic fan and I recommend this purchase. I live in a hot and humid climate with exceptionally expensive electric rates, so I tend to rely on fans more than air conditioning. I have gone through seven fans in the past two years, all name brand. I purchased two off-brand metal bladed fans a year ago and those are great except they are very loud and are dangerous with small curious children in the house. This led me to Vornado. Here are my points to consider: Pros: Reasonably quiet, even at the highest setting. REALLY moves air. My living room is 22' across and it has no trouble directing air that far. Size--this is a very small fan in comparison to the other fans I've owned (box, pedestal, floor, table), yet it does a better job. Appearance--looks pretty, and isn't an eyesore like other fans Safety--my 1.5-year old has failed in her attempts to shove her fingers through the grill. I'm sure she could if she tried harder, but it wouldn't be easy. Efficiency--I've been without power for two months now (thanks, typhoon) and rely on a power inverter. With this plugged in, it uses 50w at the highest setting. That's compared to my pedestal fan that uses 75w at the lowest setting. Cons: Price--this is not cheap! I purchased this 'repackaged' from desertcart and it saved me $15 from anywhere else I could find online. Buttons--I think the shiny buttons are meant to attract small children, and it does that very well. Though, I don't know where else the buttons could be and still be convenient for adults to adjust. Unless it was a classic dial adjustment. Speed settings--level 3 and 4 are really the only speeds I've used and I can't imagine using anything less...the lower two levels just seem a little useless. First, this fan CAN be used to direct air at you, as you would a normal fan. It does a very good job at that, in fact. It's just not maximizing the fan's potential as a whole room air circulator if you choose to aim it at yourself for cooling. Secondly, this fan is not hard at all to adjust. I'm not sure what people are attempting to do in terms of angle adjustment, but you simply slide it and it's done. And no--it does not slide out of position on it's own. I'm not kidding, it's very simple and effective. I chose the 660 versus other models based on reviews citing efficiency, and also because it looks nicer than similar models. I am happy with this purchase, it's better than I expected it to be, and I'll be buying two more for the rest of my house...as my budget allows. Update: here I am YEARS later and this is going as strong as day one. The only way you can tell it’s so old is that the white plastic has completely yellowed. Buy the black! But still buy this fan!
Review: Beats the Pants off any Regular Fan! - The Vornado 660 beats the pants off any "regular" fan. In fact - the Vornado 660 is the best fan I ever owned. Has built-in easily adjustable tilt (all the way straight up toward the ceiling if need be). Nice! Indeed - a very nice fan. It works/circulates air as advertised. We have it placed in our (800 sq ft Apt) Living Room with the air bouncing down the long hallway toward the 2 bedrooms and bathroom. I placed the 660 on a small table next to the hallway at an upward angle and blowing directly at the hall wall. In that manner - it bounces the air back and forth all the way down the hallway walls which helps carry the cool air from the living room air conditioner back to the farthest bedroom. When winter arrives it will no doubt be very helpful in circulating the heat throughout also. 4 speeds. If you're looking for total silence - forget it. It is kind of noisy on the high setting. However - on low it's pretty quite - except for us the low speed won't carry the air to where we want it. Maybe sometime in the future I'll buy another one strictly for the bedroom if the price comes down quite a bit. I'd feel MUCH more comfortable paying $49 for it than what I bought the first one at. Bought the black color Vornado 660 and it blends in very well with our color scheme. Also it is an attractive piece - not gaudy looking like a "regular box or circular" fan. The 660 fits right in with everything else. When I bought the 660 I also bought the Vornado 133 Small Air Circulator for one of the bedrooms (don't waste your money. Bad air flow. Only 2 speeds). AND the 133 had a VERY STRONG plastic smell when turned on the very first time. Sent it back to desertcart for a fast refund). The Vornado 660 has no hint of plastic smell whatsoever when running. The Vornado 660 is a really nice fan - albeit IMHO it's a bit over priced - BUT - I'm very happy with it. Other than being over priced - I doubt you'll be disappointed with how it looks, operates and circulates air all around - unlike regular fans - it's a real winner.

**Q: does this fan oscillate?**
A: No, not at all. But it's not really intended to do so. Think of this less like a "fan" that blows air straight on you. It certainly does that, but it's column of air is so narrow and direct that it's not really ideal for that. Rather, think of this as a circulator. Point it at the wall above your bed and there will be no fight over who is getting the better end of the fan because it will legitimately spray the air from where the fab is located to wherever it is pointed. Point it from the floor to near the corner of the ceiling and wall above your bed and everything and everyone along that wall will get bathed in air, lam to he while everything in the room is mixed as if I a perfect air burrito. No chinks of warm air. Just everything perfect.

**Q: Does it have an oil port on the motor?**
A: Had this fan for 5 years, and it is one of the best fans you can buy. Problems are it doesn't oscillate, and the fan gets full of dust. Recently the fan started making a noise and the fan blade was not moving. Took the fan apart including the motor and motor housing. Cleaned all of the dust out and sprayed some of the plastic parts in the shower with hot water. The motor rotor was still not spinning, so lubricated both ends of the rotor rod with wd40, and it is back to new again. Have the Vornado heater, and that's a nice product. Looking for another large Vornado fan with a stand and oscillation, remote.

**Q: Does anyone use this fan to force cool air from downstairs, up into the warmer second level of home, by placing it near the foot of a staircase?**
A: I have this fan on the floor of a room that sits below a balcony hallway. I have the fan pointed to move the cool air up into the higher spaces. It seems to move a large amount of air pretty quickly and relatively quietly compared to other fans twice its diameter. It quickly mixes the cooler air from below with the warmer  air up in the high spaces to even out the temperature. I have an ecobee system with multiple temperature monitors. When I turn on the fan the temperature in the upstairs drops by two or three degrees in about 10-15 minutes.

**Q: Is this fan 240v compatible? I'm contemplating ordering this for use in Australia**
A: Hello Jonathan, 660 model (and all Vornado models) motor has been re-worked for Australian Consumers. Do NOT buy the 120V model if you are using it in Australia. The 120V model only works for a couple of hours in Australia before the motor blows. This model is available in Australia. Please go to www.vornado.com.au and search the where to buy section. It may be a bit more expensive however, it worth spending a bit more than flushing $74.99 down the drain. Hope this helps.

This has been the very best fan I've ever had. I really mean that and I've tried just about every configuration available. As one reviewer put it, they got rid of their ceiling fan for this, he was right! This little compact unit does it all! It's got 4-speeds (more than most fans) and when I'm really hot, I turn it on high and it almost feels like air conditioning. Actually, I have air conditioning and when placed near my room vent, it makes it feel like ultimate luxury. I wish I could afford one for every room in my house! Instead, I move this whenever I go...kitchen, living room, and bedroom. I l-o-v-e it. The control are one top and super easy to find and learn and get to in the dark. It's compact, yet super powerful! And no obnoxious power lights to drive me crazy at night. Pure and simple, effective...the best!!! It provides a little white noise on high. My significant other hates it, but I love it! It's a low hum...not at all high pitch or obnoxious. It's soothing to me and on low or medium you hardly know it's on. With a footprint of 11 inch x 11inch and 12 inch x 14 inch head space, this unit is a nice compact size vs. power ratio. The price at time of my review is $100 on Amazon where I purchased (with free shipping) vs $150 retail listed on Amazon. Best Buy also sells it for $100.
