Review: Tasty - add extra water and soak time - The ample quantity of meat bits tastes like real beef, the mushrooms are fully of mushroomy goodness and the noodles are a kindness to my tired body. The portion is revivifyingly large for one hungry person and reasonable for two who have been eating lots of hiking snacks. It's not going to replace the coconut chicken curry in my heart, but it is definitely something easy and tasty to look forward to at the end of a trail day. One caution is that the instructions understate the water and soak time and can leave the meat and mushrooms a little crunchy. I find a full 400ml of boiling water and a 20 minute hydration time with a second round of stirring/mixing half way through gives good results. Given that it's better in quality (and in quantity) than the fast food I might easily buy on the way to the trailhead, I'd say these are even pretty decent value as pre-packaged backpacking meals go.
Review: Almost perfect! - Absolutely delicious! Great portion size, good ingredients, and really filling. Loved the mushrooms and the sauce. The meat had good flavor but it was cut into small cubes and they still didn't rehydrate very well. The noodles rehydrated really well and held up to a little longer soak/steam than the package said. The sauce thickened well at the 25 minute mark. If this was a couple bucks cheaper I would be inclined to stock up on these. I think Mountain House is a better value and the flavor is a pretty close runner up to Peak. All in all, it was a great warm meal at the end of a long day on trail.
