In the picture they look like brass.** A: The bolsters, I believe, are stainless steel. They are much harder than brass or nickel-silver to file and grind. I did not give this five stars due to the knife having pitting on the tang but who will see that area anyways? Obviously, the knife was not oiled prior to shipping. It came in a small rectangular box with packing peanuts. The blade was tapped between two cardboard pieces. The packing peanuts did not stop the blade from moving around in the box.
