They clamp right onto the armrests of my desk chairs, and are very sturdy. I ordered four overall, and they came as two packs of two. One pair has the cutout in the front as shown in the product picture, and the second pair doesn't have this cutout. The ones without with cutout has a smaller diameter bottom and don't hold the same size glasses as those with the cutout. They seem to be off by some fraction of an inch.
