After use they may be reactivated by heating in an oven. Desiccants are packaged in "Units" sometimes abbreviated by the letter "U". A Unit of desiccant refers to its drying capacity, not its volume. A Unit (approximately one ounce) is the amount of desiccant that will absorb at least three grams of water vapor at 20% relative humidity and at least six grams of water vapor at 40% relative humidity at 77 degrees F. So how do you safely reactivate?** A: Any oven which heats with radiant heat shining on the Tyvek pouches will melt them. Just like the sun will heat the suface of your car far above the outside air temperature. A convection oven running in "true convection" mode, and with good temperature regulation, may work. My kitchen Bosch brand convection oven works for me. Another possible approach would be to shield the pouches from radiant heat with aluminum foil -- above and below. The foil should not touch the pouches. Also, try heating the pouches at a lower temperature for a longer period. Bottom line is it's hard to do in a residential kitchen oven unless it's a convection oven that does not uses radiant heat (the glowing heating elements). Each Unit of desiccant is able to absorb three grams of water vapor at 20% relative humidity and at least six grams of water vapor at 40% relative humidity at 77 degrees F. At that point they need to be replaced or recharged.
