I am a hospice chaplain and am always searching for good material on end-of-life issues. This work does not focus on death and dying per se, but rather the dynamics of caring for someone with a life-threatening illness. Nevertheless, the book's themes are applicable to a range of issues having to do with illness and death, for those who are afflicted and those who care for them.Shinoda Bolen--a Jungian analyst who lost a son--approaches her subject matter with deeply personal and almost magical worldview. Building upon a foundation of Jungian themes and Greco-Roman mythological imagery, she contextualizes her narrative within an historical framework that places serious illness within the broad human experience. The result of this story-telling technique is that emotionally difficult material is presented as a shared experience across time and space, and in the process it presents us with some archetypal ideas on the meaning and purpose not only of life, but also of pain and suffering.This book offers the reader a new perspective on serious and/or terminal illness. Shinoda Bolen's prose evokes the notion that "a little sugar helps the medicine go down."
