You only need a small amount of the colour. The instructions say use one measure on the white colour tube. At first I didn't see the small marks, and had squeezed too much in. It probably would have been easier to say squeeze 0.5cm, but I'll know for next time. I put in the developer drops and mixed with a cotton bud - not the end of the comb tool that came with the kit as I wanted to keep this clean of the mixture. I carefully applied the mixed product to my eyebrows, creating a good shape. I went over a few times perfecting the shape. After 10 mins I cleaned off the dye with warm damp cotton pads. I then tweezed out any stray hairs outside of the shape I wanted. The results look very good. I will see how long they last but happy to do this every couple of weeks as it took about 20 mins overall. I have dark brown eyebrows with a few grey ones and it covered very well. It stained the skin within the eyebrow shape. I was careful not to be messy with the dye so didn't need any vaseline or barrier.
