## Description

Aponogeton madagascariensis which is known as the Madagascar Lace Plant, is one of the most highly prized plants in the hobby. Its leaves are broad and long with a very delicate lace appearance. Under the right conditions, these plants will flower regularly in the aquarium. This plant is more demanding than most, but is well worth the extra effort. Plant the Madagascar Lace Plant singly in the mid-ground part of the aquarium as a focal point. Trim any dead tips on these plants, to inhibit the entire leaf from decaying. Do not allow algae or any other debris to settle on or within the leaves. Provide a high amount of light in the range of 3 to 5 watts per gallon, using full spectrum (5000-7000K) bulbs. Reproduction with this plant occurs through bulb separation, or formation of seeds after flowering. Allow the new plant to develop a root system and immature leaves prior to separating it from the mother plant. At that time, it can then be planted in a different location. The Madagascar Lace Plant benefits from regular additions of CO2, iron rich fertilizers, and trace elements. It is shipped in its bulb form and will not have fully developed leaves. Under the right conditions, the leaves will quickly take form. ...............Care Level: Difficult Lighting: High Placement: Mid-ground Water Conditions: 65-72F, KH 3-6, pH 6.0-7.0 Propagation: Bulbs, Seeds Max. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Bulbs are a great way to start plants in a tank
*by G***T on March 19, 2017*

I could not tell which end of this bulb was the top or bottom, so I put it in my tank and let it float for few days to see from which ends roots and leaves sprouted. Within a week, there were leaves and roots beginning to form. I normally do not fertilize my plants, and instead let them get their nutrients from the decaying debris in the tank's substrate. Since I ordered this plant to use in a tank that was newly set up, I put a Seachem Flourish Tablet below the plant's roots when I sunk them into the tank's sand substrate. After 12 days, the plant has about 9 leaves, the tallest of which are already 5 inches long.I wanted a large plant for the back center of a 55 gallon tank for breeding freshwater Red Cherry Shrimp. I wanted a plant with leaves that would fan out to cover a large area to provide habitat for the small shrimp. For a large plant in a tall tank, this is the perfect choice. It's leaves have a very attractive wavy appearance and grow up to 20 inches tall. One of the best things is that you don't have to worry about snail eggs and other such pests hitching a ride and infesting your tank. Many large plants are raised by commercial growers in ponds that have lots of snails, parasites, and other nasties growing in them, which will hitch a ride on the plants and wreck havoc with your tank. Quarantining plants and pretreating them to kill pests is a hassle, but necessary to avoid headaches otherwise. With these bulbs, it it much easier to clean them. Salt water dips which are recommended for killing pests on plants before putting them in your tank, but the salt water can often damage tender new leaves of plants. Since this plants is shipped as a bulb, it is easy to soak in salt for a few minutes to kill anything microscopic that is hitching a free ride.A down side is that some bulbs may fail to sprout. When I order this one, I also ordered a Aponogeton Capuronii bulb from the same seller. The Capuronii bulb rotted without ever sprouting a leaf or root. From now on when I buy plant bulbs for my aquariums, I'm planning to first put them a bowl with some sand and water to make sure they sprout rather than rotting and releasing bad chemicals into the tank. From everything I read about this species, it is also considered one of the easiest plants to grow for beginners or those of us who want live plants without lots of work maintaining them. It will grow quickly with medium light and does not require CO2 treatments. For beginners with a tall tank, a plant like this is a perfect accompaniment to a good filter, as it helps reduce ammonia, nitrate, and phosphate levels in a tank between water changes.

### ⭐ I got nothing from it
*by N***L on August 19, 2025*

Nothing grew I mite try it again but I felt like I wasted money

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ a green thumb I don't have, mine is more toward the color black.
*by M***5 on July 25, 2016*

I bought 3 bulbs for my 55 gal aquarium, 48"x 12" x 18", they where already germinated with spouts of about 1/2 inch on average, this was a nice surprise, I was expecting them to not have any life to them when i opened the box and looked at the bag, later in the afternoon, Friday 7/22 I put them in the water and because they where dry they floated for about an hour, let them sit for another hour then buried them in the gravel where I wanted them. the following morning I poured in the required plant food and liquid cO2 booster, I have a Finex 24/7 planter+ LED light, which I, my fish and other plants love.as you can see by the 3 pics i posted, after only 2 days the plants have grown about another 2 or so inches, I don't have a cO2 tank setup or have plant soil and truth be known when it comes to having a green thumb mine is more toward the color black, i am not a gardener by any means, I'll do an update in a few months but i think these plants will look great once they are fully grown. The package arrived at the early end of the date expected via USPS mail and in great condition.I would recommend this supplier as a place for your next plant needs.8/3/2016Ok, so I said a few months, it's actually less then 3 weeks since receiving my bulbs and buried them in the gravel, This is astonishing, 2 of the 3 plants took off like crazy, (pictured) the one to the back is a couple of inched from my water line which puts it at 16" and the one closest is about the 12" mark the third in the middle i would have to guess at normal growth rate, 4 days ago i added a small co2 tank to my aquarium to help my ferns green up, so i don't attribute the growth to this, I'm sure it's just dumb luck i got such great plants but no matter what I'm still very please with the results I'm seeing here.
