UFOs in Mooseville? A wild and wacky entry into The Cat Who.. series

*by E***R on Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2020*

Small-town newspaper columnist/former big-city crime reporter/unexpected billionaire Jim Qwilleran ("Qwill") is planning to spend a month in his lakeside cottage, located just outside of the resort and fishing town of Mooseville, while his lady-friend Polly Duncan vacations in Canada with her sister. Of course, Qwill's amazing Siamese cats, Koko and Yum Yum, are along for the trip. Most of the residents of Mooseville are caught up in UFO fever, claiming that UFOs have been visiting the area lately and that accounts of similar visits go back decades--they were called "spirit" sightings in the 1800s and early 1900s. Qwill is utterly unimpressed by the reports of UFOs and becomes involved in much more down-to-earth mysteries, like how did a young hiker end up dead and buried under a sand dune near Qwill's cottage and how did Koko know he was there? And what were those 2 boats doing lashed together off Breakfast Island the other day? And why is the fabulous chef of the new restaurant in town married to the unpleasant owner? Six-foot-eight Derek and his girlfriend, heiress Elizabeth from Chicago, figure prominently and entertainingly in the story. A natural disaster occurs in town--or was it natural? Koko provides his usual slew of amazing clues, starting with uncovering the missing hiker in the sand dune and ending on a far more mysterious note. One of the very best in the series.

    We're they or weren't they?

*by C***S on Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2015*

I give it four stars because the really crucial point of this story was, I felt, skimmed over. When at last Qwilleran actually sees the famous Mooseville visitors, we only get--what, maybe a paragraph on it with nothing that would either satisfy or add to the mystique of either Koko or the visitors themselves.Considering that, with one exception, the tales that followed this one were not up to the usual LJB Cat Who par, with one tale not even giving the reader a reasonable conclusion, I began to suspect that the health of our beloved author had begun to decline. And I really do miss Mooseville. And what happened to Qwilleran after -- opps! Spoiler. Never mind. Just that I do miss Moose County and its inhabitants.

    Disappointing

*by B***X on Reviewed in the United States on August 16, 2013*

Braun seems to have slipped off the track in this one. I believe there are more books after this in the Cat Who series, but I haven't bothered to read them. This book just pushed the characters to places and actions that don't fit with all of the development they've gone thru to this point in the series. It's almost like someone else has picked up the characters and is now writing their stories.I understand that Braun is up there in years, and as disappointing as it is no one can be on top of their game forever.Sad about this series--for me, whether there are any books after this or not, it has ended.
