Can you actually hear out of these?? All the kids size headphones we've tried have such a low volume you can barely hear anything in them

Yes, if you have a small hole (standard headphone jack) in your computer, then you are good. :) It will not work if trying to plug into a USB port.

Does these work with Kindle and Chromebooks?

It should work unless they have a weird or different aux input adapter. We've used ours on phones, tablets etc. It's a pretty standard adapter.
