Use 1/16 to 1/8 mesh.Any crud will kill the pump, so USE THE SCREEN and it will be FLAWLESS.A great backup pump when I need a small amount to pump for my small equipment.The longest time I ran it is 5 hours continuous tp empty out a water pond.I love it. ### ⭐⭐ Extremely short lifetime *by A***N on July 29, 2012* I've been using these pumps to fill a large barrel to gravity irrigate my greenhouse. The first one I bought lasted only about one month and I thought it was merely a fluke so I purchased two more so I'd always have a spare. Well... one month later and another one is toast. Since they only run about one hour each day (if that) lifting water about ten feet, that gives this pump a life expectancy of 30 hours.
