Review: 5 Stars for Design and Build; 1 Star for Poor Quality Control - I was looking for a survival knife, with a secondary interest in bush-crafting. As a survival knife, I wanted something stout and unbreakable. Plenty of big, beefy survival knives out there, but the bush-crafting requirement somewhat limited the size of my choices. Sure, I could get those things in the Becker BK-2/22/32 series and the ESEE 5 knives, but I was looking for a reasonably priced alternative. This Schrade SCHF51 has been tested and reviewed by many on YouTube. With few reservations, it was generally praised for a tough, durable build and budget pricing. It has quality steel (1095), good balance, a comfortable and “grippy” handle, and appears built like the Becker and ESEE knives with that thick spine. Sounded like I'd found my knife. And I may have, had I been able to keep the two knives sent by desertcart. The first knife had a serious uneven grind issue: The sabre grind on one side of the blade was cut higher and ended approx. 1/8 inch higher on the spine than the other side. This resulted in an asymmetrical – and weaker - tip. This was a glaring defect and should have been flagged by quality control. I requested a replacement and received the second knife in about 4 days with zero hassle. Thank you desertcart. The second knife had an acceptable grind (hooray!) but I found “bubbles” under the factory-applied protective finish. Picking at one showed the bubbles were actually pits of rust! Closer inspection showed tentacles of rust traveling across the blade under the finish. I returned that one, too. One of the drawbacks to internet shopping is you don't get to inspect the item before you purchase. Such is the case here. In fairness and by all accounts, Schrade builds a solid product. And the stout design and price of this knife still appeal. The black TPE handle was very comfortable and the balance was spot-on for me. I still want one! So, I will continue to try to purchase one at a local brick and mortar retailer, but I'll be on the lookout for poor QC issues. Added Sept. 4, 2016: I wasn't able to find one at a retailer within 50 miles of my home, so I tried purchasing this knife again through desertcart. Thought maybe I'd luck out and get an acceptable one this time. Sadly, no: The third knife had a uneven grind that was worse than the first one. Giving up on this knife. Based on reviews on YouTube, I ordered a Schrade SCHF42 instead. 5-inch blade, recurve design that was what I expected. Proper grind, excellent quality and price. Lighter utility than the -51, but stout enough to carry as a primary blade. Very happy with this purchase. Schrade SCHF42 Frontier Full Tang Fixed Blade Knife with Leather Sheath
Review: ... the 7 inch version of this knife and I love it, Its Heavy Duty - I first purchased the SCHF52 which is the 7 inch version of this knife and I love it, Its Heavy Duty, Sharp as heck, Super comfortable in my hands and Very affordable. After using it for several months I decided that As much as I like the SCHF52, it might be a bit too big to be my main knife, so I went ahead and bought the 5 inch SCHF51 knowing that it would be a good value, and it was. The 51 is made of the same nearly 1/4" thick blade stock made from 1095HC steel. It has a double hollow ground edge and is coated with PTFE. For those not familiar Teflon is the Dupont trade marked name for PTFE so this coating is like the non stick coating on a frying pan, not an oxide or powder coating. It is attractive as well as functional because it reduces friction when cutting making this stout knife feel like a much thinner blade when slicing. The Scales are made of Schrade's now signature pattern TPE. It feels perfect in your hands...soft but not squishy...controllable but not too grippy. Its Goldie Locks Perfect both wet and dry. I wish I could get these scales for some of my other knives. Being rubber though, I wish there was a way to buy replacements as this knife will surely last a lifetime as stout as it is. It would be great to be able to buy replacement TPE scales once these wear out. I guess I will make custom wood scales once these wear out, but that a long ways off. The blade shape is identical to the SCHF36 except it has an improved shaped handle that is more comfortable and also gives you more real estate for a chopping grip.To me this knife is a great substitute for a Becker BK2 knife for those that like a BK2 but have a Schrade budget. Although In many ways I think this knife is just as good and holds its own against the BK2. Its less than half the price, it is made of a quality steel, its about the same dimensions, and it has better scales and sheath. Lots of people might prefer the BK2 sheath over the nylon sheath of the Schrade, but many ppl also complain that the hard plastic sheath of the BK2 will dull a sharp edge, and the nylon Scrade sheath is pretty decent quality and also come with a fire steel. However if you are like most people you will end up buying or having a custom sheath made if you buy either one, I am guilty of this and had Custom Kydex sheaths made for both. Main difference is the Schrade is so affordable that if you get a custom sheath made , you will no doubt pay more for the sheath than the knife!

## Questions & Answers

**Q: What should I use to keep the blade from rusting?**
A: This is 1095 high carbon steel so the best way to keep it from rusting is to thoroughly clean and dry it after use then maintain your knife by putting a thin coat of oil on the blade every week or two. Also, I would not strip the coating but let it wear off naturally as you use it. If you are looking for a knife to use near salt water or high humidity you may what to look at the F26 which is the same size knife but made of stainless steel.

**Q: If a police officer where to measure this how long would it be cause i need one under 5 inches**
A: I got the same as Kix. Over 5 inches from tip to top of hilt and 5.5 inches from tip to bottom of hilt. The hilt is angled. The length of the blade for the cutting edge is 4.5 inches. The overall length is 10 7/8" You will need to check your state laws to see how they measure the knife blade, but to be on the safe side it is about 1/8" too long.

**Q: Is wd40 better than kitchen olive oil?**
A: I use mineral oil. It doesn't go rancid or get sticky and it won't taint meat or food if that is what you use the knife for.

**Q: which is better the schf 36 frontier or this one?**
A: The schf 51 is the improved version of the 36 under hard use the 36 had a problem with the tip breaking. I Love my 51 and am thinking of buying the 52

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Wonderful geometry good deal for the money
*by D***N on April 14, 2018*

Ok this review is based on the fact that this is a $30 knife. I definitely would not take it with me as my primary but it is really fun to beat up otherwise. The blade geometry is wonderful. I own Esee's Benchmades KaBars Tops OKC's Mora's Cold Steel you name it and this is one of the better designs. It's a shame this blade geometry couldn't get reproduced with some decent heat treat and scales. Not that it's terrible mind you but it has legendary potential. I stripped the paint off mine, gave it a nice vinegar boil, and finished off the blade. I used a little Loctite on the screws and went to work abusing the thing. The handle feels great. I love the finger choil it really gives you some fine control. Jimping is recessed into the handle - something I've never seen on another knife before but it feels and works GREAT. Now that the factory paint has been removed it sets off sparks like a champ. The spine is wonderful. Chops well for a shorty thanks to some weight and an oversized handle. I spent about $2 worth of vinegar, paint stripper, and Loctite in a 33 cent disposable dollar store pan to give it a nicer look. I heard the factory coating is not that great so I removed it. Took me about an hour or so of my time including working the edge on a stone. She's pretty sharp. Not hair shaving yet but good enough to process wood and game. I may work on it some more to see how sharp I can get it. I was fortunate enough to receive mine with an even grind out of the box. I put it through some light batoning and the blade performed well. The blade however has a tough time holding an edge. In fairness I really abused it the first few days - probably more than my more expensive knives. Maybe the heat treat was on the light side but I'm not sure. It's easy enough to get an edge on it again. The knife comes with a typical nylon sheath, ok ferro and sharpener. For $30 you really cant go wrong. I spent $19 on a nice used leather sheath and will use this blade until I destroy it. Will update my review when or if that happens. UPDATE: I took some time to run this through my Workshop Ken Onion and the knife has turned into a beast. It's hair shaving sharp and the edge has been holding well even after some heavy use. Again, the factory edge was decent. It is just better now. UPDATE: 8/2019 The edge seems to dull a bit easy. Saw my first chip. I don’t think my boil should have messed with the temper the 1095 any it was constantly under 250ish but I don’t know. Still a fun knife not disappointed.
