The mattress just needs a consistent surface underneath, so if you're using a bed frame that lifts the mattress off of the ground, you'll need a sturdy platform or foundation. Some people put their mattresses straight on the floor. It's a different look, but it works fine. A bit of a side note, I have read other manufacturers recommending to *not* use a box spring with actual springs in it, which most modern box springs (or foundations) don't anyway. **Q: Mattress is only 9” out of box. Does it expand to 14 inches?** A: Yes measures filled out to 14 inches. **Q: What does the mattress smell like when it comes in the door? Some of these foam mattresses have a horrible smell for the first week or two. Will this?** A: Mine had no smell. I removed it from the box and put it on the metal base I bought late one Friday afternoon and was able to sleep on it that night. Great mattress! **Q: The picture shows a cot also.
