Openings looks large. Will this keep out mice?--this is my objective.** A: The openings are what is known in the industry as 1/2". Actual openings are .478" by .478". Yes, they will keep out mice. Fairfax County Health Department notes a mouse needs an opening the size of a nickel to squeeze through. A small dime won't fit through the openings. **Q: Can this product be used year round or will it condense and freeze over in the winter months - I live in Wisconsin** A: This version is OK for winter use. The large grid opening does not freeze up in Michigan winters. I also bought the PVS-IS3 which is a much smaller grid that I uses during spring, summer and fall. It keeps the insects out but would freeze up in winter so I change them seasonally. **Q: 96% Efficient Furnaces discharge burnt gases, these gases are corrosive to metal. How well do you expect this device to maintain its integrity?** A: I have had mine for several years and the stainless steel has not corroded at all. **Q: The inside diameter of my pvc pipe in 3.25 inches. the outside diameter is 3.75 inches. Will this screen work on my pipe?** A: According to the Amazon website description, "Please note that the PVS-RS3 has an outside diameter of 3.470 inches and is designed to install inside of any standard 3" schedule 40 or 80 PVC hub or coupling. " Given your pipe dimensions, I don't believe it will fit without adding a hub or coupling to your pipe. (Previously a PVC Floor Drain was being used which is a very poor choice for two reasons: 1) The flow of exhaust air was being significantly blocked and 2) During the winter when temperatures are below 32F/0C there is a high likelihood that the open area will decrease significantly further due to water vapor in the exhaust condensing and freezing in the small passages making them much smaller.)It is made of very high quality 300 Series Stainless Steel and it is beautifully fabricated. The installation was simple and very effective.I purchased this vent screen to prevent foreign objects (balls / toys), debris (leaves / sticks) and small animals (mice, birds, squirrels) from from being able to fall into the exhaust pipe and potentially block the exhaust and cause damage to the furnace and protect those small animals from pain and suffering since they likely would not be able to escape the 7-foot vertical rise in the pipe once they venture in. The screen has a minimal effect on the open area, and am very confident in its ability to work as desired for many years with no issues.Since the furnace is located a short distance from the outside wall, only a 2-inch diameter PVC Exhaust was required to be used for the furnace installation and since a 3-inch diameter PVC Pipe was used the open area is still considerably higher than what is required.
