No sharpening needed. While it isn't waterproof, it stays on all day and holds its own in humidity and light rain. I have never had the eyeliner mess up due to moisture although it would probably come off if I full faced swam with it on. It's cheap but it works almost as well or as well as my higher end favorites and better than tons of drugstore liners. I only paid $1.49 so I am happy with the price and the quality.
