As others stated, If you leave off the large back up plate at installation, they will swing both ways. Not recommended at the top of stairs. **Q: Can you leave this as a slide open and closed Gate or do I Have to make it a swing gate?** A: You will have to swing the gate open. **Q: does this gate swing closed automatically after opening?** A: no it doesn't. It is a great gate, keeps my dogs in the back room while in training or when I am gone for the day.
