But when you’re jockeying with a 50 gallon water heater in sometimes a small location like a closet, that non-flexibility can prove to be a curse instead of a blessing. The flexibility on the edge of the pan allows you to tip the tank forward or even backward, get the pan’s lip started under the tank, and then walk it into the drain pan without having to “lift” the tank to get it into the pan. And once it’s in the pan, the finish on the surface of the pan allows you to center the tank in the pan.
