I wasn't surprised as the medium cage X9 RD is spec'd for a 36 tooth cog max. I swapped in a long cage X0 RD and it operated flawlessly. You will need to determine the chain wrap capacity of your rear derailleur to determine if it will shift across all cogs. There are varying hacks available to you to try such a installing a longer B screw, using a GoatLink, or perhaps a J Tek ShiftMate coupled with a Shimano MTB rear derailleur. I hope this helps. **Q: will it work on a 8 speed Specalized stout hub?** A: You need to measure you cassette hub and or the witch of the 8 spreed cassette. There are a few Youtube's of people measuring and trying this. I fit an 11 speed cassette onto a 9 speed so I would think you shod be OK. You can always return it. **Q: Will this fit on an 8 speed freehub? Thanks!** A: Mine had 8, I swapped the 8 one with this, changed the chain and rear derailleur and shifter.
