Though the larger cause was doomed from the start, I've been a Mag Lite user ever since, keeping one close at hand in each of the family cars and in each level of the home. About the same time, a good friend in Costa Rica and I were exulting in the merits of Dockers pants. Memorably, he exclaimed 'Why does anybody else even make *pants*?!' That was probably unfair to Dockers' competitors and is probably not completely accurate when asked about makers of other flashlights. But it is a question worth asking. The Mag Lite is a marvel of over-engineering. You may never need the strength of the casing, the brilliance of the light itself, and the potency of six batteries in a very long flashlight. But when you do, and you hear the satisfying 'click' of the Mag Lite on button, you'll wonder why anybody else even makes flashlights.
