It definitely makes cutting and preparing meals a lot more fun. The knife is very sharp and solidly made. Although I believe that its main purpose is to be used to chop or dice, it works very well as an all purpose knife for cutting meats and cheese. You simply rock the knife back and forth as directed for best results. I have used this knife daily since I received it and it has replaced most of the other knives that I had been using.It comes with a very nice wooden cutting board. It's a little smaller than I expected but serves its purpose well. One side has a slot on the end to hold the knife upright when not in use. It also has a bowl like area in the center to help with keeping food in place. Overall, you can't go wrong with adding this to the tools in your kitchen. I received this item at a discount in exchange for my honest and unbiased review. ### ⭐ Long time Alaskan review of a cheap knock off made in China product *by C***C on August 2, 2016* I have lived in Alaska for over 24 years and am very familiar with legitimate quality handcrafted ulu knives, bowls and native Alaskan products. The product displayed here is not one of them. This unlike the majority of the reviews for the product is a verified purchase. Check it out for yourself only 13 are verified purchases out of 42 at this time. The attached pictures tells a very interesting story of the deceptive practices the seller Kanata Brands uses for this knock off product. The first picture is a screenshot of the order when it was placed. Notice off to the left the differences in the bowls pictured. It shows one bowl with 3 thicker dark stripes and another with 4 thin stripes. The box shows Ulu Factory, Anchorage, Alaska and claims to have polar bear design handle. This is not made by The Ulu Factory. It is not created in Anchorage, Alaska but in China or (PRC) and does not have a polar bear design on the handle. All false information and deceptive bait and switch practices by the seller Kanata Brands.The second and third pictures are close ups of the nice deep walnut and birch bowl in the set. The truth being told this nice bowl is not what was received. The seller used these images as bait and switch tactics. The pictures have since been corrected to show the thinner board but there is no way the thin board can chop items neatly as it shows without making a mess. This is more deceptive practices by the seller to trick buyers who are not familiar with a real ulu knife set. I owned many sets over the years and have lots of practice with them. This set is terrible not even close to what the description claims. There are many reviews made by unverified purchases which makes me further question the sellers honestly and integrity.The fourth picture is what the set looked like when it arrived. The knife was askew inside the box, luckily it had a plastic sheath over the blade or it would have cut someone if they were not careful. The fifth picture is the thin "rubberwood" bowl received. This would be instantly ruined by an accidental wash in a dishwasher. This cheap bowl compared to others I own wouldn't even hold more than a few small items in place to chop such as herbs, lettuce or peppers as shown in the images.The final picture which was cleverly hidden under the knife is the only place where you will see the true place this phony product was made. It was made in China or PRC as the seller would say. The PRC for your information is the Peoples Republic of China. ### ⭐⭐⭐ ok for a Chinese made Ulu but... *by J***K on August 13, 2016* Having grown up pretty far away from Alaska, I had no idea what an ulu knife was or that it was a tool used primarily by Eskimos. I thought this with its different design would be a good chopping knife. Although the top part of the packaging sort of implies that this is made in Alaska, this set is actually made in China. Since I wasn’t so familiar with this type of knife and don’t own an authentic Alaskan ulu, I researched to find the characteristics of a good ulu set and compare those to this one.On the surface, even though this isn’t made in Alaska, this initially looked like a pretty decent set but to me there are a few issues that I found with this that hurts my overall opinion. I will say that if getting a genuine made in Alaska ulu set is important, then you most likely will not like this set.The blade of the knife I received is pretty sharp and cuts very well. It was sharp enough to make marks on the cutting board when I initially used it. The one issue that I have with the knife is that the handle is not particularly comfortable. The handle is small, especially so if you have large hands, and the square edges on each end are unfinished and rough. Some images of ulu knives I have found have a similar design to this one but at least some photos I found on Alaska made ulus have a bit better design with the handles made a bit differently with angled ends that are smooth and the wood completely smooth and finished giving a more comfortable grip. The other difference is that the blade is locked solidly in the handle with that angled handle version, whereas this one has similar metal rivets but has a slot cut into the wood that hasn’t been sealed up. The problem with that slot is both food and or water can easily get into the wood handle and eventually damage it or cause bacterial issues. Because of that slot, I hand wash the knife instead of dishwashing it in order to keep the water from penetrating into the slot of the handle. That slot cut into the knife handle is also not easy to clean out either.Although the board itself has a storage slot for the knife cut into the wood, this should have included some type of knife cover. The slot on the board is nice for having a place to put the knife when you are using it but it isn’t so practical for storage like a cover would be. Also, the slot on the board, like the knife, is an easy place for dirt and food pieces to accumulate and isn’t so easy to clean out either.The board that I initially received was damaged with a 5-inch crack running down the seam of one of the darker parts of the board. Half of that crack ran all the way through the width of the board. (I have attached photos of the damage board in addition to the undamaged one for reference.) I don’t know if this was caused in shipping or not, but to be fair, the manufacturer quickly sent a replacement after I emailed about the problem. The replacement board did not have any damage issues.The cutting board (approximately 8.75 by 8 inch inches and right around 1-inch thick) is a smaller sized one but it looks nice with its striped design. Although the product description it says it is made of rubber wood, the package it came in says birch and walnut wood. I really don’t know which wood it is but it is a dense hardwood. I do think it should be bit larger and thicker than it is though.The cutting board has a flat side and an indented side which is good for chopping. I do think the indention on the board is not nearly as deep as it should be. The blade of the knife should fit perfectly into the curvature of the bowl side of the board and in this case it doesn’t quite do that. A deeper curvature that more closely matches the curvature of the blade would make chopping a bit easier as this board tends to make more of a mess than it should due to the shallow bowl side. The board has a light finish on it and is smooth for the most part, but there are a couple small areas that have a little roughness to them. This is minor to me and not uncommon with wood chopping boards.Although this is a decent quality set, this set could be improved in a couple of areas. The issues with the uncomfortable handle that could be designed a bit better along with a board that should be larger/thicker that should have a deeper curvature on the bowl side that more closely matches the blade’s curvature, hurts my overall opinion of the product.
