If you keep it sharp with a strop or a surgical stone it will cut pretty thick leather. It will take some work as the blade is straight, unlike a headknife. **Q: What type of steel is this blade made from?** A: Stainless steel. Come pretty darn sharp. I ran mine down some 800 grist sandpaper then a strop with jewelers rouge and it’s as sharp as a scalpel. For the price of you do what I did it’s a great leather knife. **Q: Is this right handed or left handed?** A: I'm not sure it's primarily for right handed people. I'm left handed and have no issues using it. **Q: Will this knife work for the edges of soft leather?** A: This is a great knife if you keep it sharp however nothing is very good at beveling, skiving, or tapering soft leather. I have some great soft leather that is about 4mm thick but even my best razor cutting knife isn’t able to taper it uniformly. it takes more effort. This knife is for beveling and skiving and it does that very well. You’re shooting for a 10 dreg angle . Blue tape a round pice of nylon on the handle so you can redress that angle. Start with 80 grit , marker up the blade . I did mine on a granite tile and the area that I’m sanding is only touching the blade . The nylon spacers is wrapped with blue tape . It takes time to redress the angle . Once that has a burr on the opposite side switch to 150 grit and repeat the process. Use a fine grit stone to clean the burr off the back . Then go to 180 grit so the same . After I got to 220-320 I started using the sand paper on the bevel on the back. I used water on the wet/ dry sandpaper. I went all the way to 15000 grit . Front and back , make sure on the back you hold the blade flat to the sandpaper. Keep the same amount of pressure on the blade fro start to finish. Onlt the cutting edge of the blade will be on the sandpaper . Once you get to 15000 grit do it bevel side and back 3-4 times . Your done wit the sandpaper. Now on to the strop board buy one or make one and use green stick compound on the smooth side of the leather. 20 times on the bevels side and the same on the back holding it flat . Then 15 , 10, 5 ,1 . It should be very sharp . Now this will shive shuck or thin leather , I’ve done four knives the cheap ones and a planer blade . Or you can spend the extra coin a buy a higher tagged knife and hit it with a strop and your set.
