Review: Appropriately Packaged - Package arrived quickly and was appropriately padded/protected. Unfortuately the drive itself, 32 TB Exos M (though new) was not working — tested in two separate systems to be sure. Not seller’s fault however and return process was painless.
Review: Works very well, quiet, and fast. Worth it. - So far it's been more then a year and it hasn't given a single problem yet. When it starts spinning it makes a buzzing sound for a second or two, then its quiet. I've moved a few TB on and off of it so far, speeds are fast, capacity is slightly less then what's advertised (as is the case with almost every hard drive I've bought). Overall good purchase, I'll buy again.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Are these retail or oem? seagate won't warranty oem drives.**
A: Purchased 30+ units of X18 18TB SATA (ST18000NM000J) from HyperHawk. Checked each serial number and can confirm that all of them have eligible retail warranty from Seagate US. Caveat is that I cannot tell you that this would be the case for other sellers.

**Q: What is the warranty?**
A: The answers here need some correction. There are multiple sellers based on the specific drive but all the listings reference the Seagate store. So the companies are selling these drives for Seagate. These are ALL retail drives, or are supposed to be. The seller is not allowed by Seagate to sell an OEM drive so if you get one, report it. Maybe it's best to check warranty status when you first get it. You can also report it to Amazon because violating company policy also violates Amazon's policies for selling on Amazon.

They don't have a warranty from the day you buy them, they have a warranty from the date they were manufactured so it's a policy I don't quite like, but I've bought multiple drives from this listing, had to deal with one and it's a 5 year warranty for ALL the EXOS drives, that is 5 years from the date it was manufactured. So the people saying they have no warranty are wrong. Maybe they bought a drive on another Amazon listing.

OEM BTW is a special deal that a manufacturer will make with system builders. The system builder makes systems, sells the system and takes full responsibility if something goes wrong. When a system builder buys OEM parts, there's typically less warranty so they take more risk, but they also get a lower price on the products HP for instance sells PCs. They have a warranty for a time period for the system. If something goes wrong with the system, you deal with HP, not a company that makes a component in that system.

**Q: This drive was made for datacenters. Can it be used in a regular pc as a separate drive besides the main drive containing the operating system?**
A: As long as you have a modern PC. It's typical SATA III interface. The only issue is with older PCs because you need a BIOS that can deal with GPT partitions. But really, if you have something that came out after around 2010 - 2012, the BIOS should be more modern. BIOS, being software/hardware = firmware that's involved with the basic functionality of the hardware that's part of the PC, which is what brings the PC up to the state of being able to load an operating system, such as Windows or Linux.

**Q: What is the difference between the regular 16th and the X18 version?**
A: The primary difference between the X16 and X18 versions is the capacity of the individual platters in the drive, and slight increases in the transfer rate. The maximum capacity of the platters 2TB for the X18, and 1.6TB for the X16. Transfer rates for the X18 increased to 270MB/s, up from 261MB/s for the X16.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Works very well, quiet, and fast. Worth it.

### ⭐ Failed after 6 months - "fatal device hardware error" - not satisfied with warranty
*by H***W on May 22, 2024*

Purchased in November 2023 this Seagate EXOS 16TB drive failed after light use as an external backup drive connected via USB 3.2 cable to my lightly used Dell XPS 8960 computer where for maybe four hours a day I do emails and spend time online and process and post my own photographs. In other words I am a home user not generating much data. The drive did a few full backups and then incremental daily backups since late November. For redundancy I used a second 16 TB drive on alternative weeks, a Toshiba X300, that is still working fine. So my Seagate EXOS only worked for three months actual work, doing about 10 minutes backup per day. Last week I was most unhappy when the Seagate stopped doing backups. Windows Computer Management > Disk Storage reported "fatal device hardware error" and could not access the drive... could not read the drive or write to the drive. Last Thursday six days ago I went to the Seagate website warranty page requesting a replacement and today, Wednesday, I received a replacement on my front steps. Very nice, very efficient. However, one huge problem. Seagate is requiring me to return the bad drive without removing confidential data. I just now had an online chat with a very polite support person telling them the drive contains a lot of confidential data and I want to make sure the data cannot be read. I explained it is impossible to use software to erase data on a drive that cannot be read and that I want to drill a hole through the disk to prevent anyone from accessing it. While I cannot access the drive on my computer, a technically skilled person might be able to access it using more advanced techniques or just fixing the hardware error. The person responded saying that drilling the hole will void my warranty. They added that Seagate's procedures and protocols will absolutely prevent anyone from seeing my data. I responded saying I know Seagate to be an honorable and reputable company, but that I know perfectly well procedures and protocols are not always followed. So... I am not at all satisfied with Seagate's warranty procedures. Customers should be allowed to obtain warranty replacement on a failed drive that the customer disables to prevent any access to confidential data. They send the bad drive in purely to provide proof of drive failure.
