    A warp-kissed bundle of descriptors and elaborate pronouns, plot light, explosion heavy.

I enjoy the setting immensely, but the protagonist has his emotions "dialed back," which makes him a program or a video game AI, and dramatically less interesting. Pages and pages of repeated epithets - "warp-kissed servitors," and "warp-kissed forge defenses."  I know how hard it is to write a novel - and respect the author - but the same adjectives and epithets in the same paragraph - that's just lazy. The sentence structure is awkward, stilted and at time seems overly complex - like an intentional "per word" moment. The dialogue between the characters (two dimensional as they are) is actually some of the most clear writing in the whole book. I'm sorry to be so negative, but I was really looking forward to this read.Things like "All Skitarii..." bother me, because isn't Skitarii already the plural - could you not as easily vox, "Skitarii, fall back..." ?? As I said, awkward phrasing and stilted narration - an artificial, forced pile of adjectives for, Mechanicus weapons, fire, warp-kissed this and that, explosions and bad guys.I've read an embarrassing amount of Black Library publications, but this was one that will stick out as a disappointment. That said, I'm almost 40. Were I fifteen, this book would have blown my socks off.Really the whole piece just needed stronger editing. Prose can be enticing, and creative (of course) but should also be concise and advance the plot.

A good novel in the 40k universe. Some parts are predictable but still good if you want a novel about the Adeptus Mechanicus.  Hail the machine god!
