I have had 4 in space of a 2hr bike ride and its kept me going. In terms of the packaging the tear-off strip is just a bit too thick to be able to tear without stopping. You certainly cant do it when running without stopping. It just doesnt tear enough to give confidence youve opened it IMO. I guess its made thicker versus older pack variants (ive used these gels loads in years gone by) to stop the plastic top tab from being just dropped on the floor when out and about (that bit works)... but it could just be thinner on one side to make it easier to consume.
