Inferior quality item now being sold - it does the job but you will not receive what you see in the picture

*by B***N on Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2016*

Inferior item shipped. Item pictured shows heavier gauge wire. Item received made of flimsier wire, similar to that used in a canary or parakeet cage. Easily bendable with only one tab for closure, not two as on the green one shown. A red basket made of wire half the size of what is shown.. In addition, a cheaper chain attached. It does the job, but what they are now selling is NOT what you see in the picture. If you can find a feed store that has older stock of this item, BUY it there. The item now sold by the manufacturer has been considerably downgraded in quality. Amazon should change the picture of the product because they are representing the old, sturdier version, not the thin-wired, dumbed-down, lower quality item being represented. In the photographs you can see the clear difference in wire gauge quality, as well as the revised configuration of the way the product now opens. In addition, the previous version had stronger wire closure tabs. Instead of the thicker green vinyl coating, the red vinyl coating is much thinner. It does, however serve the purpose of holding the treat squares. After all, chickens are not parrots and they will not destroy or chew and bend the wire, so it works. You may still be able to obtain original versions from vendors or web sites other than Amazon, at a few dollars more. If you order the treat basket here, you will not receive the item pictured. You'll get a red one.

Keeps the chickens busy, which is important during the snowy winter season. At first I didn't like how long the chain was and that the basket itself didn't just mount sturdy to the coop. The chickens don't exactly have any finesse, so they peck and jab at the basket causing it to swing and bounce all over the place. I was disappointed when I first saw this, as it is far more difficult for them to pull out the treats than if it were affixed solid to the coop. However it turns out this is actually a bonus in the winter time, as the hens are all "cooped" up due to the snow and they need something to do. The fact that it can be hard to pull certain types of treats out gives them something constructive to do rather than pecking each other causing injury and feather loss. When the hens are confined together for long periods, just like women, they get irritated by each other and start pecking. This won't solve all pecking issues, but can be used in conjunction with say hanging CD's to peck at or seed blocks etc.

Made for chickens approved by chickens

I agree with Bird Person's review. I wish the wire was thicker and more durable. However, I have been using the wild bird treat feeder for my chickens and they love the larger openings that this offers. Also, the happy hen treat squares really seem popular with my flock!
