I'm curious as to how this unit will handle in rougher conditions such as offshore?** A: I can provide another data point here. Although my system is an older version of this (Mk1 wheel drive, ST5000+ control head) I don't think these systems have changed all that much and likely only for the better. My application is well outside the manufacturers recommendation. Our boat is 40' displacement power boat, 14 tons, 6.5 knot cruise, hydraulic steering 6 turns lock to lock. Rudder is large and steering is highly responsive, steering effort is low. We are using a Raymarine rudder reference connected to this unit. It is virtually impossible for me to steer as straight as this system does, even in a following sea. I feel that this setup works well on our boat mostly because the steering effort is low and the rudder very responsive. The autopilot steers the boat the vast majority of the time we are running. Since we are a power boat and engine is running while we are under way power consumption is not an issue. The wheel drive is noisy, but so is our engine. I don't mind the noise of the wheel drive as it lets me know it is working. I have a wired remote and in open water on a nice day it is very pleasant to sit out on the front deck and steer with the remote. We just got back from a cruise where the autopilot steered the boat for several stretches of 3-4 hours or more non-stop. All of this being said, since we have hydraulic steering a hydraulic pump (instead of the wheel drive) would be a better option without a doubt, but a much more expensive one. **Q: can it be used on a power 22 ft. fishing boat ?** A: Yes. If there is a pedestal or wall to mount the wheel control. Need a fixed solid surface and spokes on the wheel. The rests is easily, but don't know why there are so many parts. The cpu, the compass and control head (display) can actually be combine into a small unit. **Q: do you have what I need: spare wheel for raymarine st4000 without drive unit and cables?** A: I do but am selling it as a full unit **Q: Can this be tied into a larger nmea system? useful with a wifi nema sender? for use with tablets and such?** A: Sorry, I don't have an NMEA network other than the links between the autopilot components. Raymarine should be able to answer this question. I will tell you that I am very happy with how the autopilot functions on our 34 foot sailboat. The installation wasn't trivial but if you read the instructions it isn't difficult. My goal was to be able to single hand my 28 foot sailboat. Took me a couple full days to install but everyone's results will vary. Took her out for a sea trial by myself and was extremely pleased at the outcome. I ran it for 4 hours straight and it didn't put a dint in the battery bank. I was extremely pleased how it changed my sailing experience. Being a slave to the helm is no way to sail. This was a game changer for me. I am extremely pleased so far! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Worth It! *by S***E on Reviewed in the United States on 19 February 2021* I was concerned about installing this on my S2 8C sailboat as I have a stiff steering pedestal. I don’t have roller bearings centering my wheel shaft. Instead it uses plastic bushings. Despite my concerns I was impressed the little motor had no issues turning the wheel. Installation was relatively easy but I have to suggest you consider buying longer sea talk cables. My only real complaint is the ones provided are only 3ft long. Probably not a real concern for a powerboat. The sensor core is supposed to be mounted as far forward in the bow as possible. With a 5 meter cable I was able to mount the sensor to my mast support down below deck. The calibration was pretty straight forward as the set up wizard does most of the work. I suggest you get the instructions for this part online as the printed book provided is a little confusing. Performing two large circles and then two smaller circles was the key to completing the final steps for magnetization. Overall I’m really impressed with how clean the all in one design is. The thickness of the product is slim and doesn’t add any bulk to the wheel. Making its sheerness in the cockpit desirable. I’m looking forward to spending my time trolling fish rather than 8-12 hr days behind the wheel while solo. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Fantastic Unit *by J***N on Reviewed in the United States on 14 August 2017* This unit is outstanding.
