It plays cute circus music while it's on, and it runs less than a minute before shutting off so that you can start again if you'd like. I also read other reviews that complained the balls shot out all over the place, but we don't have that problem. Occasionally the balls will miss the ear, but that's part of the fun for the kids: watching and collecting the balls! I'm a teacher, so when I think of educational value, I automatically think about reading/writing/vocabulary; while it doesn't necessarily teach those areas, it is AWESOME for hand/eye coordination! My little girl loves trying to catch the balls as they come out and will hover over the trunk trying to grab the balls. Very fun toy overall! But it is great fun for my niece and she wouldn't stop using it as soon as the batteries were put in. Unlike what others say, it is easy to put the batteries in and comes fully assembled. I recommend this toy to anyone with a child ages 9 months to 14 months old. I purchased this item in blue on amazon because I found the price to be better online than even in local stores such as Target, Walmart, etc. I bought this as a 2012 Christmas gift for my niece who was 9 months old at the time.
