First thing I did was throw away the applicator and instead I used my gloved fingers to apply the product to very small sections of hair. This gave me a lot more control over where the highlights would be. I also applied it pretty close to my scalp, since my hair is already blonde. With these modifications, I liked the result. It gave me nice highlights, and the toner/gloss left my hair soft and shiny. Very good for a home kit and a lot less than going to a salon.
