The answer is Yes to both. In Landscape orientation you fold over the front cover & lock it into the tabs/slots on the back of the cover. In that mode You can choose a variety of “lean-back” angles. In Portrait orientation you go through the same steps the just rotate the iPad 90 degrees (on edge). It will stand absolutely vertical in that mode. The only way to get it to “lean back” any in Portrait mode is to leave the front cover loose (not locked into the slots). You’ll see the corners of the front cover has been “clipped.” By tilting the iPad back with the cover extended behind you can tilt it back about 15-30 degrees. Feels extremely sturdy and well-designed. I rarely use the stand feature, but the grooves are very thoughtfully designed and works really well, the few times I do use it. I like the placement of the Apple pencil groove, which attaches magnetically at the same placement as it would, without the case. I have never had a problem with it coming dislodged accidentally. It also has an additional pencil-shaped stretch pocket which seems convenient, but I have never had to make use of it. The material has a leathery feel and makes it easy to grip. Overall it's a great case. It protects my iPad without feeling bulky.
