The high surface area of the pieces leads to lots of oxidation and loss of material to slag. My main reason for writing this however was cleanliness of the metal itself. The grains were probably sourced from recycled aluminum bullet shell casings. When touched, my hands got gunpowder residue on them, and when I melted some in my furnace, the smell of gunpowder was overwhelming.
