Review: A tool that isn't necessarily needed but saves so much headache - This tool will save you so much headache in hard to reach areas. I was surprised by how well it functions and I find myself going to this tool anytime I work with a hose clamp regardless of how easy it is to access. One of those tools that isn't needed but I would highly recommend it to an DIY or full time mechanic. Also it's an Astro tool so it's affordable and great quality as always with Astro
Review: Worked on a small clamp - I am working on a 2003 Dodge Durango and it needs the power steering hoses replaced. The return hose goes from the steering rack straight to the reservoir and is secured with a pinch clamp. The ears were on the bottom and I could not get a pair of pliers on it. I heard of these type of hose clamp pliers but, never had to use one. A lot of comments were reported that most of these units are cheaply made and won’t work on small clamps. I decided on the one made by astro. Probably because all their tools are made excellently. Took me less than 5 minutes to unpack, figure this thing out and remove the hard to get to clamp. The unit is well made with what appears to be a powder coating finish. The clamping portion turns so you can easily position it with one hand while operating the clamp. One has to squeeze it enough to engage the locking pawl. This locks the clamp in an open position. Very happy with this purchase and recommend it.

OK. I had a no name spring clamp tool before, this is almost identical, but definitely better in a few important ways. Thicker steel, so presumably stronger. Same for the thicker cable, which is also available as a replacement part. The lock mechanism is similar, but the pawl has two teeth (vs one), and less freeplay keeps the teeth aligned better. The lock/ratchet on the non-astro one seemed soft,, wore quickly and started slipping. I hope and expect this one to last longer. The lock/ratchet on the Astro, like the cheap one, is too coarse. The "sector " has 8 teeth, but only 3 clicks moves the "business end" from full open to full closed, two when actually squeezing a clamp, as the travel is then less due to the thickness of the clamp ears. This is somewhat made up for by having a threaded fine adjustment on the cable. I'd still prefer finer teeth on the ratchet. So, I'd like a thing or two different, but am happy with it. It's pretty good, and, like all Astro tools seem to be, a good deal. This cable thing is almost always better than pliers of any sort.
