They are waterproof and will not leak however my friend is not going to do so because they are so beautiful as they are. They are made out of highly lacquered wood and the desertcart picture does not capture the beauty of the wood and the striations in the wood. Hebi Arts is based in Oakland,CA and has an excellent website describing who they are and with bios of the artists. Their pieces are sold through high end stores such as Gumps and Nieman Marcus. The packaging was also excellent. It was double boxed. Vased well packed in a box and then shipped in a larger box surrounded by packing peanuts. Great gift for very reasonable price. I did research for lower pricing and desertcart had the best. Review: Shorter than described - The description says the large vase measures 26.75 inches, but it actually only measures 22 inches to its tallest point. It doesn't seem like much but that 4.75 inches makes a big difference. I wanted to display them in my living room next to my fireplace. I measured it before I ordered and it would have been perfect if they came as described. Now it just looks too small and out of place.
