## Overview

The Watts Premier Replacement Sensor Valve Kit is a precision-engineered component for Watts Hot Water Recirculation Systems (models 500800, 500805, HWRS-WH). Featuring an automatic sensor valve that opens when water cools and closes at 98°F, it ensures rapid hot water delivery while conserving water and energy. Equipped with two 12" supply lines, reducing fittings, and mounting screws, it offers straightforward indoor installation on standard tank water heaters. Ideal for professionals and homeowners seeking efficient, eco-friendly hot water solutions that enhance comfort and reduce waste.

## Description

Designed for use on branched hot water lines coming from the water heater or at the furthest point in the home, the Watts Premier Replacement Sensor Valve Kit ensures that hot water gets to all areas of the home. It is exclusively compatible with Watts Hot Water Recirculation Systems, models 500800, 500805 and HWRS-WH. It is not designed to be used with a dedicated return line to the water heater. As an essential part of the hot water recirculating system, the sensor valve enhances the efficiency of your hot water system by opening when the water on the hot water side cools, effectively pushing the cool water back to the water heater. Once the hot water line reaches 98°F, the valve closes, ensuring that you have immediate access to hot water while reducing the wait time. This not only improves comfort but also helps in conserving water. This product is equipped with two 12" supply lines, two reducing fittings from 1/2" FTP to 3/8" MPT, and two mounting screws. With a simple design that makes it easy to install and replace, requiring no additional components or specialized tools, this Sensor Valve Kit can also be installed parallel to existing sensor valves to increase the speed of water recirculation. The Watts Premier Sensor Valve Kit is compatible with all types of pipes, adding to its versatility. However, it is designed for indoor use only on standard tank water heaters in residential buildings. It is not suitable for use with tankless water heaters or for outdoor applications.

Review: Works like a charm, easy to program with Echo button - I purchased the pump and one sensor valve years ago and it has and still works flawlessly, my only complaint had to do with the old fashion timer which is pretty much useless since I never really need the hot water at the same time everyday and whenever there are power outages, the timer stops and it needs to be reset. My water heater being in the garage, I usually have to move several things out of the way to access the pump and having the timer set for several hours to make sure you cover the time range at which you usually take showers is a waste of power (personally I had it ran for 2 to 3 hours in the morning and also in the evening). To alleviate this problem, I plugged the pump in a cheap WiFi connected plug (doesn't really matter what brand you use as long as you don't mind adding another app on your phone for the initial setup), I set the pump on the constant ON mode, then I purchased a couple of Echo buttons available for $20 on desertcart, created a routine in my Alexa app to turn ON the pump (via the connected plug), wait 10 min and then turn it OFF. Lastly, I setup the echo buttons to trigger the routine when I press on either one of the buttons, placed one in the bathroom and one in the kitchen, et voilà! Each time I really need the hot water, I press on one of the buttons, get my water almost instantly and I don't have to worry about power consumption knowing that 10 min later the pump will be OFF. Getting instant hot water when you need it and saving water and power at the same time! I highly recommend this product to anyone having to wait a few minutes to get hot water in the right places.
Review: Works really well. A bit of a challenge to install. - We discovered the idea of water recirculation pumps in our prior house, and used it to cut the time needed to have hot water in our bathrooms located far away from our water heater. We moved that system to our new house, and it works well here too, except that now our kitchen water supply was also taking a long time to heat up. To fix that, I added this second valve kit, and all is now well in both our bathrooms and our kitchen. Note: for anyone unsure about installing this, we had a plumber do it for us in our previous house, and after watching how it was done figured I'd give it a try this time. The one gotcha is that it was not at all clear which end is which, so I managed to install this valve backwards initially, resulting in complete inability to ever get hot water in the kitchen. Once I reversed the direction of this valve, all was well again. (The basic idea is that this valve goes under the sink furthest from your water heater, and covers all the water outlets along the way. However, if you have a second main water path, as we did to our kitchen, you may need an extra of these valves.) One caution is that the threads on this valve are just plastic, so easy to mis-thread. Having been warned about that, I was careful and had no such problem. I've been told that these save energy by cutting wasted hot water. I can't confirm that, but can confirm they have not noticeably increased either our use of natural gas or of water, as our bills for both show very low usage. Definitely recommended!

## Questions & Answers

**Q: So what this does is move the hot water through the pipes constantly, not just when you need it? Seems like an energy suck. Is it?**
A: If you run this all the time you will likely increase your water heating costs significantly as you are turning your pipes into a big radiant heater. You can use the built in timer to only have it come on at set periods, but this will only work if you have a very fixed schedule. I attacked this another way. I plugged the unit into a TP-Link HS110 Smart plug that is Alexa controlled. I can just say turn on hot water pump or turn off hot water pump when I want to control it. But that was not good enough for me. I found that if this pump ran for four minutes it would give me hot water at the distant shower that I wanted, so I did the following. I wrote a routine to turn on the pump, wait four minutes and then turn it off. While I can run this by voice, I bought the new Amazon Alexa Button, they are about $14 for a two pack. The button is battery operated and communicates to another Alexa device. Just before I take a shower I push the button and within four minutes the water will be hot without having to run water.

**Q: If the pump is on, and the water is hot, the sensor valve closes, right? Isn't the pump trying to push water against a totally closed line?**
A: The pump just stirs water in the pump housing. It's not a positive displacement pump, so it has no problem doing that. But most of the time the control valve allows a trickle of hot water to flow, just enough to keep the faucet temperature at a constant 100°.

**Q: can i used without the sensor valve**
A: The control valve keeps the water temperature at the faucet at 100° by slowing the flow to a trickle. If you don't use the control valve, be prepared for the hot water to circulate at full speed and the temperature at the faucet to go up to whatever your water heater is set for.

**Q: Does this shut down the flow completely once temperature is reached or will it continue to trickle water into the cold water line?**
A: The valve allows a slow flow of water back through the cold water line, enough to maintain the temperature at the faucet at about 100°F. If you let the hot water run, the temperature at the faucet goes over 100°F, and the valve shuts off the back flow through the cold water line. After the faucet is shut off, the water in the valve will cool to below 100°F, and the valve will crack open and allow some flow to keep the water warm. The valve does not bang open and shut. It opens more or less, as needed to keep the water warm at the faucet. It doesn't depend on the temperature set at the water heater, except that if the water is very hot, obviously it takes less to keep the water warm at the faucet. The valve accomplishes this automatically.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Works great
*by T***D on December 31, 2018*

I've had my Watts hot water recirculating pump for several years, 8 - 10 I guess. It really does a great job of getting the hot water to the far side of the house; I think that helps prevent the water lines from freezing. The only reason that I had to replace the original sensor was because I made the mistake of using plumbers putty on the sensor threads. When I changed the faucet and the lines, the connections seemed to be super glued, so I broke the sensor. As the instructions state, DO NOT USE PLUMBERS' PUTTY, etc., on the sensor threads. The metal fittings provided with the sensor were fine. There was a burr on one of the sensor threads. I was able to smooth it out with little a brass nut, and then used the provided hardware; no big deal. This sensor is apparently set to a higher temp than the previous sensor, but that's not a problem. The sensor is pricey, but it's worth it to me. When my original pump goes out, I'll get another pump, continue using the current sensor, and keep the sensor provided with the new pump as a spare.
