I purchased this to put on a wood deck. Salt will damage a wood deck, but this product has a different formula to avoid damage. I can't say that I thought it melted ice as good as salt, but it did not leave any damage to my deck. Thus, I doubt it would hurt a painted surface. **Q: what are the ingredients?** A: No idea but you can get Ingredients on Google. I've used on concrete, grass where my pet travels. No issues. Quickly melts ice/snow. My pet's re-entry where he shakes off pellets with no damage to carpet or wood floors. Gave containers to 3 neighbors and they loved it as well.
