Once I even forgot to spray the surface before cooking a waffle, and the waffle still came off clean (with no oil in the mix)! Makes great waffles, too. I like them so much, and find them so easy to make -- just a mix plus water, and throw in some nut pieces -- that now I have a waffle just about every morning. To clean, I just wait for the iron to cool down, then wipe out the grooves, and any surface that got oil spray on it, with a paper towel. That's it! I suppose if it were going to sit for a longer time between uses, I might try to get the oil off more completely. But it never sits very long! Have also made potato pancakes using hash browns, eggs, and sometimes canned salmon. Those make a great dinner entree, and the iron still comes clean with amazing ease.
