They help a lot, stopping metal spikes from slipping on rock surfaces; basically they help with your stability when using the poles. I sometimes lose my pole tips when the pole gets stuck between rocks and the tip pulls off when I extract the pole. Very nice to now have replacements - 9 should last for awhile.
