## Overview

The MG Chemicals 838AR-P Carbon Conductive Pen delivers a fast-drying, low-resistance conductive paint in a convenient pen format. Engineered with high-purity carbon black, it creates durable, corrosion-resistant conductive traces on a wide range of substrates including plastics, metals, ceramics, and 3D printing materials. Ideal for prototyping, repairs, and Maker projects, it offers precise control with a valve tip and dries quickly at room temperature, making it a must-have tool for professionals seeking reliable electrical connections on the go.

## Description

The 838AR-P Carbon conductive pen is a conductive, fast drying paint in a convenient pen format. It quickly and easily creates conductive traces that are durable, reliable, and corrosion resistant. It adheres To A wide variety of substrates. The paint is a tough acrylic polymer pigmented with high purity Carbon Black. The Carbon Black imparts superior corrosion resistance as well as high conductivity. This product works best on smooth, flat, and hard surfaces. It has a valve tip that opens when the pen is pressed against the surface to be drawn on and it has a soft tube, so the flow may be controlled by squeezing the centre of the pen. It is used to draw resistors and connect grounds in prototyping, hobbies, or Maker projects. It can be used to create traces where a higher resistance connection is desired such as when drawing in jumpers or other simple electrical connections. It is good for restoring conductivity to contact surfaces and extending contact areas. Use It as an economical alternative to nickel or silver paints where extreme conductivity is not required. Attention Shake rigorously before use. For best results hold pen at angle, depress pen tip against surface, and draw pen across surface while gently squeezing middle. Note: Product SafetyThis product is subject to specific safety warnings.Causes serious eye irritation.Highly flammable liquid and vapour.May cause drowsiness or dizziness.Repeated exposure may cause skin dryness or ing.Safety data sheet available on request.Suspected of causing cancer by inhalation.

Review: I had a few remote controls where most of the keys stopped working due to the carbon wearing off the membrane pads and not making sufficient contact with the PCB. Putting a blob of this carbon compound on the carbon pads of the membrane fixed the problem entirely. A few tips; - wear gloves, this stuff is messy and carcinogenic - shake the pen for 30s - use a sheet of paper to clean the nib - make sure the surface is clean, IPA+cotton bud - leave for 24 hours for conductivity and strength

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Will this work to coat the non-working rubber buttons on a remote control**
A: Yes, this worked great. First, clean the circuit board where the contacts are using Isopropyl alcohol. I also used Iso to clean off the rubber dot, which is usually a conductive carbon substance. Then apply the *carbon* version of this product to the black dot. Cover the whole surface and let it dry completely before re-assembling.

**Q: Can this be used to repair a broken strip in a car rear defogger?**
A: I just tested a 1/2" long x1/8" wide strip on a piece of pyrex glass and got 0 resistance for that length. It seems to conduct well for a short distance and stuck to the glass very well. I hope this helps.

**Q: Does it work for making a PCB?**
A: In my opinion, it's far from the ideal for making your own PCB. I can see it being used for prototyping of low voltage/low current circuits. This particular compound is based on nickel, which is not a as conductive as copper. This pen would work fine for the small repairs like cuts or tears in the existing PCB traces. BTW, there's a more conductive version of this pen which is based on silver.Aside from conductivity issue, there's an issue of securing parts to PCB. I,also, doubt you can solder to the trace drawn with this pen.

**Q: Is this pen good for making a jumper on a circuit board?**
A: Yes, it's great for that but even the carbon conductive (lowest quality) pen would work for that
