The way the book was written, though, really kept me going because the writing is so fluid and pulls you into the next chapter. Initially i wasn't quite sure about it...and as I continued on, I found myself getting more and more absorbed in the very human emotions portrayed in this novel. By the time it ended, I found myself teary-eyed and rooting for the main character. I've never read a book before where I was unsure about it until I finished it and had some time to think about it. I'm very impressed with this author and look forward to reading more of his work. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A Great High Wire Act *by A***. on Reviewed in the United States on June 11, 2014* How do you make a self-centered, self-destructive jerk compelling?By breathing life into him the way author Krans has. Jake is a summer camp director with a pill popping habit that makes Johnny Cash look like an altar boy. He is hanging on by a thread.But what emerges – and what makes this a deep read – is that Jake is in a lot of pain, and is simply trying to dampen that pain with any and every chemical he can get his hands on.The high wire of it all is how Krans deftly paints Jake’s arc: he undergoes real transformation, but it never feels sappy or sentimental or untrue to the character. Krans’ passionate first person voice and acid wit help.By the end of the book, I felt nothing but compassion for Jake and the kids in his care. If you’ve ever been in pain, and grasped – however blindly – for a way to cope with it, this book is for you. It’s about human frailty, and ultimately, human hope. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Can't put it down *by J***S on Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2011* I know my camp directors were never like this, and for the sake of all children out there, I hope one like main character Jake doesn't exist anywhere! Sadly, they probably do exist. But this guy has some serious issues, which makes the book a fascinating read. I started it on a Monday and finished it the next day.There are some messed up parts and there are some emotional parts, almost bringing me to tears when the narrator recounts memories of his father.
