    I Can Hear You Now!

*by R***9 on Reviewed in the United States on July 5, 2017*

Update: Well, it's been more than six months since I began using these hearing aids and I'm sill just as happy with them now as I was then. Definitely life-improving and I have no complaints. Most people I meet are amazed that I'm wearing aids since they really are difficult to see. But they're even more amazed at the value, especially if they've ever priced HA's with a local dealer. Anyway... hoping they continue to serve me as well next year._ _ _ _ _I'm 62 and was first diagnosed with hearing loss related to Meniere's Disease when I was 55. Since then, my hearing has deteriorated to the point it has been impacting my ability to play live music, function in business meetings, and understand casual conversations. I can hear, but have difficulty with lack of clarity and understanding. Both myself and others have been growing weary of my frequent requests for speakers to repeat themselves. My search for hearing aids started this spring, and I paid a visit to Costco and a local HA specialist for free hearing tests, and both confirmed the same relative hearing loss: minor loss in the left ear, more pronounced loss in the right. Costco proposed aids at about $2400/pair, the local provider was about $2100/pair. In each case, a BTE set was recommended and was also my planned choice since I didn't want to alter the way sound enters my ear. These were to be my first set of aids and I wanted to stay under my $2000 budget so I did more online research and found reviews for the iHearMAX product. The reviews were generally positive and indicated comparable performance at substantially lower cost compared to those available from conventional HA vendors. I determined I could risk $300 per device and give them a try for the 30 day trial period. And being a techie, the idea of being able to do my own programming adjustments myself intrigued me. If nothing else, this could prevent the need for occasional trips/costs to have my aids readjusted. So I took the plunge, bought a pair of iHearMAX's from Amazon along with the test and programming kit. In two days the package arrived at my workplace and I had them in my ears within 10 minutes. Wow - I could instantly hear more that I had in some time, but out of the box they were actually too "hot" and needed to be adjusted for my particular needs. When I arrived home that evening, I had them programmed and in my ears within an hour. I had no difficulty with the connection setup or testing process and even ran through it twice to be sure my results were consistent. The MAX's are smaller and far more comfortable than I anticipated (even with my eyeglasses) and I find myself checking to be sure they're still there. I'm getting about 5-6 days from each battery (14-18 hours per day) so batteries should only cost $4-5 per month total. They lack direct Bluetooth connectivity, a dedicated phone app, and some other features found in devices costing several times more, but while these features may be nice to have but they don't necessarily enhance hearing or usability. As a musician, I'm a critical listener even if my natural hearing ability is less than golden. I was concerned that any hearing aid would add unwanted distortion or other audible artifacts that would make them unsuitable. The MAX's, at least with my settings and a vented tip, provide a crisp and clean augmentation of higher frequencies and I'm very pleased with the sound quality. I'm even able to use my high-end around-the-ear headphones and in-the-ear buds while wearing both aids.I will mention that I did have an issue with one device after just 4 days. I returned it to the company (they provided free shipping) and received a replacement after a couple weeks. The new unit was easily programmed to match the original and is working fine.I didn't expect the iHearMAX to provide the level of performance it does and, consequently, I'm very satisfied overall. They have definitely had a positive impact on my lifestyle and attitude. I hope to use them for 2-3 years and them move on to the next product the iHear Medical comes up with as the technology progresses.

    Subpar sound quality, don't last

*by D***O on Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2018*

Bought these about 6 months ago, and from the very first day the sound quality has been pretty bad. I bought the programming kit which is the only way to adjust them (really? Sell them with a bad hearing setup then to "fix" it plunk more money into it?) but no matter what I did, the hearing aids would either sound like Bruce Lee hitting nunchuks against furniture or would whistle. I tried the open air, closed air buds, all possible programming combinations and no go. Now they are starting to quit working randomly. Sometimes pushing on the wire works, sometimes it doesn't. I'm suspecting those wires or the speakers are starting to fail. So to "fix" that, surprise, pay more money for those replacements. No thanks. I'll use these as long as I can then look for something of better quality. Probably a set of hearing aids from Sam's, those actually sounded very nice, even though they are pricey. I guess you get what you pay for in this case.
